Formate Technical Manual, Part B: Compatibilities and Interactions
Section B4: Compatibility with Oilfield Fluids

Formate brines used in drilling, completion and workover applications can be exposed to many different fluids on the rig. Such fluids include other oilfield brines, water-, oil-, and synthetic-based drilling fluids, base oil, seawater and various well treatment fluids, such as glycols and methanol. Understanding how formate brines react with these various fluids is important when adding a spacer fluid, how this spacer fluid should be designed and when handling formate brines contaminated by other fluids. This section of the manual presents a thorough compatibility review between formate brines and several fluids commonly available on the rig.
