Formate Technical Manual, Part A: Chemical and Physical Properties
Section A8: Lubricity

High-concentration formate brines are very lubricious. Exactly how lubricious these brines are depends on the formate concentration. More concentrated formate brines are more lubricious than less concentrated formate brines. Concentrated cesium and potassium formate single-salt brines and their blends are shown to be even more lubricious than oil-based muds. This section of the manual presents the outcome of two big studies on formate brine lubricity. One study was completed using the Westport HLT Lubricity Tester and the other with the BP side load lubricity tester. Measured coefficients of friction are presented for sodium, potassium and cesium formate single-salt brines and cesium / potassium formate brine blends.
