Formate Technical Manual, Part A: Chemical and Physical Properties
Section A3 Water Activity and Colligative Properties
Formate brines are aqueous solutions containing large amounts of dissolved salt and very little water. Their water activities are therefore very low and their properties can deviate widely from those of pure water. This section of the manual presents measured water activity data for sodium, potassium, and cesium formate single-salt brines and their blends. Properties that are directly related to the water activity of a fluid are the colligative fluid properties, such as boiling point, freezing point, vapour pressure and osmotic pressure. The boiling points for sodium, potassium and cesium formate single-salt brines and cesium / potassium formate brine blends are presented along with vapour-pressure data for some potassium formate and cesium formate single-salt brines.
