Formates – the environmentally friendly brines

Cabot Specialty Fluids’s formate brines meet or surpass the demanding environmental standards set by CEFAS (Centre for Environment, Fisheries and Aquaculture Science) in the UK, the Norwegian Pollution Control Authority (SFT) and other environmental authorities throughout the world. Used in highly sensitive environments from the Barents and North Seas to onshore use in Germany and Alaska, formate brines reduce the environmental effect of hydrocarbon exploration. In fact, over the last few years formate brines have completely replaced hazardous zinc bromide as the completion brine of choice in the North and Norwegian Seas.

Protect your crew
Formate brines are not only environmentally friendly but drilling crew friendly as well. The non-toxicity of the fluids means they pose very little risk, with excellent test results against conventional fluids for dermal toxicity, eye irritation, skin sensitisation and mutagencity. Read the article on brine safety to learn more about the effects of halide brines.

Unlike zinc and calcium bromide, formate brines can be handled safely without rubber suits, full-face protection and respirators
